As we discussed previously in our series, Writer’s Block is technically a myth. But that doesn’t mean the imaginary hurdle can’t get in your way. The mere idea of Writer’s Block has hindered plenty of writers from completing their writing projects, or even starting their first book. What a shame that the rest of the world may never hear their stories.
Here’s 5 ways “Writer’s Block” could be holding you back:
1. You could be building an incredible career
While you’re staring out the window, batting away every idea that comes to mind, you could be transforming one of those ideas into a brilliant story. There’s nothing you can’t revise and nothing that can’t be improved—including your craft as you publish more work. It doesn’t have to be perfect! Churn out those words, revise that manuscript, and get it out there to the world. The clock is ticking.
2. You’re causing yourself more doubt
The more you doubt your abilities, the more you’ll doubt your story idea, your plot decisions, or even your title. Give yourself a boost by bouncing ideas off trusted beta readers/critique partners, checking out our Aspiration Series, or reading a previous work you penned in the past. And then? As writers do, write. With every sentence, page, and chapter completed, you’ll find that your confidence in yourself and your abilities will grow. And before long, you’ll have achieved something you never thought possible.
3. You could be having fun
When you’re wasting time doubting yourself and your ideas because they aren’t “good enough”, you’re not working to get to the the truly “good” stuff. Constantly avoiding writing won’t help you improve. And meanwhile, you’re miserable. You need to push through the “bad” stuff if you ever hope to get to the “good part”. That’s where you’ll find some of your best writing and rediscover what made you fall in love with storytelling in the first place.
4. You’re not growing / improving
If you don’t overcome the fear of being a poor writer, you’ll never write. And without writing, you’ll never grow. All writing will help you improve, even if you think it’s trash. Those 10,000 hours still count, so long as you receive feedback to help you improve. So, pick an idea, or even a prompt, and get writing. You’ll quickly learn what’s working and what isn’t.
5. You’re hiding your stories from the world
The worst part about letting Writer’s Block get in your way is that it could keep you from penning the stories of your heart. You could be inspiring someone to make a change in their life, or even to become a writer themselves. There is a unique story that only you can tell. Do you really want to keep it inside because of a little bit of doubt? Push through.
Conclusion
